Office of Consulting and Research - The official website of SMU (2023)

The SMU Guidance Office - Golden Jubilee Souvenirs Program (1928-1978) started the 1974-1975 school year with two programs. They were a group outing and a physical examination.

The Group Counseling Program enables mentoring of small groups of students by faculty advisors. These small groups meet regularly to discuss important issues that are decided by both students and tutors. The program aims to: 1. Discover students with hidden or innate talents and help develop their potential by recommending them for membership in various school organizations; 2. Identifying students with problems and helping them find solutions to these problems; and 3. Supporting students with learning difficulties.

in those years; From 1974 to 1975, the Saint Mary's College Guidance and Examinations Office served 2,379 students, 588 seniors, and 922 elementary students, for a total of 3,089 students. The college's counseling and examination office served not only its own students, but also students from various high schools in the provinces of Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao and Quirino.

From 1971 to 1974, the Advice Bureau was designated as the NCEE FAPE College Admission Testing Center in 1973. For the past four years, she has conducted, assessed and interpreted psychological tests for CICM Prelature Secondary School in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya and assisted these schools in implementing their counseling and testing programs. In partnership with the SMC Graduate School and funded by a US CICM grant, the company expanded services to 47 career counselors in high schools (private and public) in Region II and sponsored the Summer Institute of Career Guidance in April–May 1974 (SMU Golden). Jubilee Book, 1928-1978).

The College Guidance Center organized an orientation seminar on July 11, 1974 at the SMC Guidance Center for administrators and guidance counselors of all Catholic high schools in Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino.

Miss Dalisay Browner and Miss Sofia Juanino, both advisors, formed the staff of the project. They gave lectures on the importance of counseling in the education system; 1. Objectives and achievements of the guidance program and 2. Objectives and activities of the project itself The objectives of the orientation seminar are consistent with the mission of helping the school and implementing the guidance program required by the Private School Office. The goals are; 1. To sensitize all school staff through guidance and counseling to the vast educational opportunities of Filipino youth; 2. Supporting schools in planning their effective participation in achieving the socio-economic goals of the new society by shaping youth values, changing attitudes and being flexible in adapting to a rapidly changing society.

Consulting Office all year round; 1974-1975 housed in room A-206 and started a scholarship program to help students struggling with academic workloads. The support program began in the second semester to help students who fail to achieve intermediate grades. In this context, students with unsatisfactory grades are asked to contact the counseling center for correction. For students who failed English1a and English1b who would like to take advantage of this opportunity, individual practice is offered as needed. It covers grammar, reading skills and composition.

Under the SMC Advisory Program for 1974-1975, the goals of the Clinic are: 1. To manage the orientation programme;2. Administer, revise and interpret standardized tests as required; 3. Collecting and storing personal information of all enrolled students; 4. Providing support to individual students who experience difficulties and problems in academic work, adaptation, health, financial and other related issues;5. Helping students discover and develop their talents and interests; 6. revive the classroom counseling program; and 7. Cooperate with the administration in maintaining classroom and campus discipline.

At the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, the clinic was located in the hall of the gymnasium on the second floor. In the early 1980s, SMC-GTO was moved to a new location on the 3rd floor of the library building. Ms. Paz Gamma (+) as director, Ms. Maria Teresa Bautista and Ms. Nena Padilla. After two years, Ms. Gajes (+) took over the secretariat for one semester together with Ms. Tessy Jandoc. Ms. Bautista and Ms. Padilla were advisors along with Ms. Leonora Damaso.

In the 1981-1982 school year, two young counselors were sent to Manila for seminar classes (training and workshops) in guidance and counseling to expand and upgrade the counseling center to improve the counseling program. As an offshoot of these training courses and workshops, the SMC-GTO now offers peer counselor training for prospective students recommended by a college-level teacher advisor.

It was in 1983 when Dr. Leonora L. Damaso took over the management of SMC-GTO when Ms. Gamma left for another country. Her associates included Mrs. Maria Theresa Bautista, Mrs. Nena Padilla, Mr. John Tayaban and Mrs. Aurora Saquing, and Mrs. Zenaida Academia as office secretary. There were six advisory services, namely: the information service, the advisory service, the individual analysis/testing service, the research and assessment service, the placement and follow-up service, and the advisory service.

In the second semester of the 1984-1985 school year, Mrs. Lorvin Adducul was transferred to SMC-GTO as Office Secretary. The director at that time was Dr. Leonora Damaso with the staff mentioned in the previous paragraph. It has been observed that peer counselor training will be held annually for interested students of all levels and faculties this year until the year Ms. Adducul completes her BSED-Guidance and Counseling Diploma. The leading consultant was Mrs. Bautista with Mrs. Nena Padilla. Trained individuals served as tutors in academic endeavors (support of math subjects); Adaptation to the new school environment.

In the early 1990s, more consultants were hired: Miss Grace Tindaan and Miss Alona Costales, respectively. Two years before the 90s of the twentieth century, on the third floor of the library building (next to GOT), an Admission Point for active and committed peer counselors was established. She was given computer time off so that she could accommodate her schoolmates and friends for academic tutoring, especially in mathematics. Communication Skills and College Life Survival were introduced to help students find coping strategies to adapt to the new environment of their "new home away from home".

When Ms. Adducul graduated from Counseling in 1999, she worked as a peer counselor until 2000. During these years, GTO was moved to the CL building on the first floor. PK in those years consisted of counseling and non-consulting courses. They were students who had been trained on the PC and were willing to help carry out various consulting services within their capabilities.

In 2001-2002, SMU-GTO was moved again to another building, A-101, with Mrs. Ester Cantong as its director. Mrs. Ruby Lyn Nuestro took over the advising of PC, who was appointed Advisor to Marian Peer. PAASCU accreditors noted that PC SMU awarded commendable credits for implementing the SMU Leadership Program. Thanks to their efforts, the Peer Counselor's Office was created, which is adjacent to the Advice and Research Office. Because this organization not only helps counselors in the implementation of counseling services, they also acted as models and facilitators of MHYLDP (the program of the Dean's Office for Student Affairs). PC Office was also established as a youth center in 2003 with Ms Rachel Lapitan as PC consultant. Currently, this small office served as two offices for (PC Office and Teen Center).

With the help of MPC, SMU-GTO is constantly involved in the implementation of various consulting services. And when Ms. Adducul was appointed Human Resources Manager in the office in 2008, she went to great lengths to create the framework for MPC. Lord Bon Homme Richard Torres as adviser to date. Trained MPCs acted not only as tutors, but also co-moderators and trainers of seminars and workshops in the field of leadership, team building and peer counselling. The name of the organization has changed since S.Y. It was also changed to MPCO (Organization of Marian Counselors) in 2010-2011 when the Shepherd's Way in the Spirit was introduced as a means of implementing the counseling program. What is the difference between the Shepherding Way and Spirit in the MPC curriculum? Ministry means being with peers from the time they enter college until they graduate. Tutoring is defined as staying together or being together to work on a specific topic of academic difficulty until the client/student understands the topic.

The guidance program has been intensified from 2009 to date with six guidance services (SMU-GTO Guidance Program, 2009). Additional services have been introduced as part of guidance, such as counselling, referrals and the OFW children's programme. For these reasons, intensive PC and management training for Marina's students was intensified, with an emphasis on Marian volunteer work. Leadership, immersion, support group and empowerment.
